i have given up being polite, i have phoned the helpline
for windows, and sat on hold for just under an hour, a
total cost of just under £100.
I WANT TO KNOW WHY I KEEP GETTING POP UPS AND HAVE TO PAY
TO STOP THEM! THEY ARE BEING SENT FROM MICROSOFT! BUT TO
GET RID OF THEM LIKE I HAVE SAID I HAVE TO PAY! I AM
SERIOUSLY THINKING OF TAKING LEGAL ACTION AS IT IS
INTERUPTING ME EVEN AS I TYPE THIS MESSAGE! AND WHEN I AM
TRYING TO WORK, I AM RUDLY INTERUPTED EVERY MINUTE WITHOUT
FAIL BY A POP UP THAT IS TRYING TO GET ME TO BUY SOFTWARE
THAT PROBERLY DOESNT EVEN WORK! now, i'm affraid that if i
do not get a reply and an agrement to halt these pop ups
then i will be forced to take legal action!

Heck and see if you have this label on your PC case. Just follow the link

James;
1. This is not Microsoft.
These groups are provided by Microsoft but Microsoft does not
officially monitor them although some Microsoft do stop in
occasionally on their own time.
These groups are peer to peer, that means it is people like you and me
asking a question and people like you and me giving the answer.
No one gets paid to be here.

2. If you had a firewall active, you would not have those messages.
They are NOT "BEING SENT FROM MICROSOFT".
They are Messenger Service.
These ads are using Messenger Service.
Messenger Service is a valuable tool many use.
Like many tools, it can be exploited.

No need to pay for the fix.
For Messenger Service ads:
You need to install or enable a firewall:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=330904
Disabling Messenger Service can be a good idea, but it does not solve
the real problem.
The ads are not the real problem, the ads are only a symptom.
The real problem is open ports that allow unwanted traffic into the
computer.
Disabling Messenger does nothing for the open ports.
The firewall controls the traffic.

Internet Connection Firewall will not work if you have AOL.
AOL is not compatible with Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall
(ICF)
If you have AOL, you should contact AOL and/or get a 3rd party
firewall.

Disable Messenger Service:
Start/Control Panel, click Administrative Tools, click Services.
Go down to "Messenger".
Right click "Messenger" and select Properties.
Then under Start-up select DISABLE
Click OK and follow prompts

James -

We are NOT Microsoft. We are end users, just like you. Threats will do you
no good here.

To get rid of the Messenger pop-ups, enable the built-in firewall in Windows
XP.

These messages are a symptom of having open ports on your system and are
being exploited by 3rd parties who prefer to "spam" you with messages rather
than earn an honest living.

#1, The voluteers here do not HAVE to do ANYTHING. These people are
volunteers. Even those from Microsoft that come here do not HAVE to answer
your question and your little suit (that would have no effect, because you
have to LEARN to use your computer properly instead of whining about it to
other people..) isn't going to affect 95% of the people here.

#2, if you had any reasoning power what-so-ever - you would have done a
search on these newsgroups and/or the internet using Google or your favorite
search engine and FOUND the answer I am about to give you.

As far as firewalls go, you can download ZoneAlarm for free (as long as it is
not for company use) and it will do a better job than the built in ICF of XP.

You sir are both pompus and ignorant! I am amazed that anyone even took the
time to acknowledge your ignorance let alone provide assistance.

You deserve and will be given your rightful *PLONK* you're lawyer will
probably do same.

Good Bye

You will have to excuse "James Morgan," Len. He doesn't realize the days of
being a "Sahib" are long gone. I wouldn't be at all surprized to learn he
attended some isolated public school (our "private" schools in North
America), where they still teach the "sun doesn't set on the British
Empire." He then became a low level government bureaucrat in a dead end
position and made the lives of his underlings a living hell. He is likely
now retired and misses the "good old days."

I am sadened that anyone took the time to respond and/or
also gave this person an answer.

Please like this need to be left to ignorance so that
lawyers may laugh at them when they present their
horribly stupidly idiotic lawsuits.

Sir, you need to STFU and RTFM.

Pop ups are NOT coming from Microsoft NOR your ISP. If
ANYTHING, it's all those porn sites you been visiting
lately. Make sure you hide it before the wife finds out!

You have no room on these boards.

Politely,
