Yet another missing address bar question

Tried clearing all caches, 842903, 555130, unchecking/rechecking all
toolbars, and there is no stub of an address bar anywhere on the IE 6.x
screen of this particular machine to move.

Machine is a nearly new ThinkPad, XP SP2, and I have run latest versions of
Spybot, AdAware, Rootkit Revealer, finding nothing but a couple of tracking
cookies. Virus scanner is current and is run daily, WFW is turned on as well.

What has my friend done to deserve this, and what can be done to fix this?

Did you try dragging the other toolbars up and down to see if one is hiding
it?

Attn: Frank.

Perhaps she is missing the CLSID for the Address bar
{01E04581-4EEE-11D0-BFE9-00AA005B4383}
I tried this on my own machine and the symptoms were identical. I had the
Address bar checked in the View>Toolbars menu, but the Address bar was still
not visible.( I have my own utility so I could easily reverse the tweak).
There are two possible ways to disable the address bar
1. Delete the above CLSID from the

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\WebBrowser

key.

OR

Provide an incorrect path to %SystemRoot%\system32\browseui.dll

under the Address bars InProcServer32 reference in the registry key

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{01E04581-4EEE-11D0-BFE9-00AA005B4383}

Opps. Now my Address bar has disappeared too! From IE, Windows Explorer and
the Task bar! I think this has something to do with anti-phissing and
protected dlls as it occurred after I changed the Implemented categories for
the Address Bar, or when I renamed the InProcServer32 path (to disable the
address bar manually). Recovering the original registry values did not work
and I have re-started.

If you want to still navigate you can use the File/Open menu to enter a url.

Sure did. Also tried dragging fields within other toolbars to see if
something was hiding the errant Address bar...no joy there. As we White Sox
fans say, "He gone" (except this is is in a not-so-positive light, not a "na
na hey hey goodbye" light, if you catch my drift ^_^).

First, I thought I understood "he gone" until I read your parenthetical
explanation, which I don't know enough South Side slang to understand. I
was raised in the suburbs, and the northern ones at that.

Second, your problem. I will give you my normal instructions but I think
you've already done everything I know:

Right click the toolbar and make sure that Lock Toolbars is not checked and
that Address Bar is checked.
Grab the handle at the left end of each toolbar and drag them down. One of
them is probably hiding the Address bar.

Are you using IE7? There is a bug when switching from Fullscreen mode.
Press F4 twice to get your Address bar back after switching back to
normal mode.

(Looked at your headers.)
Probably not (or you're not posting from the problem machine?)

OP at least claims to be using XPsp2 (but posts from the web interface
to newsgroups so there are no more clues about version there.)

Frank, pretty sure I tried that before doing regedits. (Start w/the stuff
that will cause the least possible harm first.) Machine and owner are in
Milwaukee suburbs; I am in Chgo western suburbs (where I grew up). Always
enjoyed the Sox, park, and fans more than the N. Side team...

Is it possible to repair IE installation?

Robert--

Nope, not using IE7 on that machine, but posting from my own machine via
Firefox 1.5 RCsomething-or-another. (Longtime Opera user; can't live without
tabbed browsing, don't do MS betas until they get released as live product
^_^) Can't post from problem machine; it is in WI; I am in IL. All machines
are XP SP 2; however only 1 has the MIA address bar (the ThinkPad in WI).

Make sure your anti-virus is turned off.
If you added WinXP SP2 you will have to uninstall that first.

Not using IE7 here either Robert. I thought I knew what I was doing and
tried to reproduce Clairs problem.

I disabled the address bar alright (reneamed the InProcServer32 in the
address bar HKCR key) but when I renamed it back the darn bar still refuses
to appear even after a restart. I have a feeling that this has something to
do with anti-phissing and the protected dll cache.

Clair.

You can naviagate without the address bar by using the hot keys Ctrl+O to
open the Open URL dialog. The Open URL dialog is probably faster than the
Address Bar and has a drop-down list of your typed urls.

Just unchecking the Address bar in View,... was not enough? <eg>

Perhaps you should try an IE Repair? Did you by any chance install
IE6sp1 before installing an XP service pack? If so you would have
setupwbv.dll and be able to use the standard:

rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance

Alternatively, if you have XPsp2 you can fix up ieuinit.inf (see my other
posts about that file for the 4 typos that need fixing) and use:

iexplore.exe /rereg

For a guess at that the actual regsvr32 command which might do it
try the list given in KB831429. Since you mentioned browseui.dll
earlier, perhaps it is sufficient to use just:

regsvr32 /i browseui.dll

In fact since you know exactly which value you want replaced
it might be interesting for you to run RegMon monitoring just that key
to see if any of the repair procedures touch it and exactly which module
it is.

Good luck
