Of course, in the last decade of Usenet’s life, it became increasingly
emaciated and diseases, robbing many of us of those fond memories.
Legitimate users flocked to newer mediums and all that was left was the
infectious spam.
The child hasn't a clue of what are *related* newsgroups where
cross-posting is appropriate. The peurile's attempt to cross-post his
flame across multiple unrelated newsgroups thwarted by removing all but
one group (since none of them were related groups).
Back then, it wasn't so much about the spam and trolls but the huge
influx of Usenet ignorants when AOL dumped them over here and each year
in the fall when the kiddies go back to school.
After that, the biggest source for the influx of spam and trolls that I
remember happened was when Google bought Deja News and then provided
their webnews-for-boobs interface to Usenet. Periodically I see another
jump in influx when a new anonymizing remailer shows up that I haven't
yet noticed and blocked.
