Of course, in the last decade of Usenet’s life, it became increasingly
emaciated and diseases, robbing many of us of those fond memories.
Legitimate users flocked to newer mediums and all that was left was the
infectious spam.

g00gle "eternal september" sometime. the "death of usenet" has been
predicted for a loooooong time :)
its like those "end days" prophets...

Why don't you take a letter opener and stick it in your skull?

Another exhibit (posted through AIOE) as to why some *adults* decide to
filter out all posts submitted through *unregistered* Usenet providers.
Newsgroups: alt.comp.hardware,24hoursupport.helpdesk,alt.comp.freeware

The child hasn't a clue of what are *related* newsgroups where
cross-posting is appropriate. The peurile's attempt to cross-post his
flame across multiple unrelated newsgroups thwarted by removing all but
one group (since none of them were related groups).

Sounds very much like you, DUH-ane.

N-n-n-n-nineteen.

NOTE: Unrelated newsgroups (24hoursupport.helpdesk,alt.comp.freeware)
that the troll attempted to include in his flame were removed in my
reply.

The one that I remember (and after asking Wolfgang why he picked
Eternal-September as his new domain name to change from Motzarella) is:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eternal_september

Back then, it wasn't so much about the spam and trolls but the huge
influx of Usenet ignorants when AOL dumped them over here and each year
in the fall when the kiddies go back to school.

After that, the biggest source for the influx of spam and trolls that I
remember happened was when Google bought Deja News and then provided
their webnews-for-boobs interface to Usenet. Periodically I see another
jump in influx when a new anonymizing remailer shows up that I haven't
yet noticed and blocked.
