Is this the only domain controller/DNS server?

I am working on a Server 2003 Server with a similar problem. I have one
temporary server acting as the DC. After rebuilding the server that crashed
I cannot make the rebuilt server a DC because of DNS issues indicating the
rebuilt server is not available. I can log in to the domain, I can map
drives, I can set permissions, but when I try to promote the rebuilt server
to a AD DC it says it cannot find the DC. After downloading MS Support Tools
and running NetDiag.exe /fix the DC Discovery test indicates: failure, cannot
find DC to get DC list from...Error no such domain. I have tried rebuilding
the server from scratch, ipconfig /registerdns, restarting net logon service.
I think it is a DNS problem but need some help. I am not a DNS expert by
any stretch.

Hello Jeff,

You talked about a crashed DC. Did you clean up AD to remove all old entries?
Do you use the same name for the new one? Please post an ipconfig /all from
the running DC/DNS and the server you trying to promote.

I am working on a Server 2003 Server with a similar problem. I have
one
temporary server acting as the DC. After rebuilding the server that
crashed
I cannot make the rebuilt server a DC because of DNS issues indicating
the
rebuilt server is not available. I can log in to the domain, I can
map
drives, I can set permissions, but when I try to promote the rebuilt
server
to a AD DC it says it cannot find the DC. After downloading MS
Support Tools
and running NetDiag.exe /fix the DC Discovery test indicates: failure,
cannot
find DC to get DC list from...Error no such domain. I have tried
rebuilding
the server from scratch, ipconfig /registerdns, restarting net logon
service.
I think it is a DNS problem but need some help. I am not a DNS
expert by
any stretch.

How is your dns configuration? Forward lookup zones, Reverse Lookup
zones. Is this the only domain controller/DNS server?

The DC originally crashed from a hard drive failure which corrupted the
original AD. So when I rebuild the Domain, I built it from scratch on a
temporary server OS. After working through SCSI card and driver issues I
finally go the OS loaded to the original server.

After my post this afternoon, I needed some air so I left for a couple hours
and came back to find I was able to make the promote the Original server to
DC status. Login to the domain is very slow. When I try to add Domain Users
to the Power User group on PC's throughout the office I am not able to see
the Domain accounts, only the local machine accounts....?

rebuilt server is not available. I can log in to the domain, I can

to a AD DC it says it cannot find the DC. After downloading MS
Support Tools
and running NetDiag.exe /fix the DC Discovery test indicates:
failure,

find DC to get DC list from...Error no such domain. I have tried
rebuilding
the server from scratch, ipconfig /registerdns, restarting net logon
service.
I think it is a DNS problem but need some help. I am not a DNS
expert by
any stretch.

How is your dns configuration? Forward lookup zones, Reverse Lookup
zones. Is this the only domain controller/DNS server?

When I said I built the domain from scratch, I meant that I took a totally
different box loaded with a separate and new copy of the Server OS, using
only the same Domain name and built an entirely new Domain. I used no backup
solution or restore procedure to build the new Domain. Does this help answer
the first post questions?

a new domain with the same name or rebuild the server from backup?

The DC originally crashed from a hard drive failure which corrupted
the original AD. So when I rebuild the Domain, I built it from
scratch on a temporary server OS. After working through SCSI card and
driver issues I finally go the OS loaded to the original server.

After my post this afternoon, I needed some air so I left for a couple
hours and came back to find I was able to make the promote the
Original server to DC status. Login to the domain is very slow. When
I try to add Domain Users to the Power User group on PC's throughout
the office I am not able to see the Domain accounts, only the local
machine accounts....?

Hello Jeff,

You talked about a crashed DC. Did you clean up AD to remove all old
entries? Do you use the same name for the new one? Please post an
ipconfig /all from the running DC/DNS and the server you trying to
promote.

Hello Jeff,

Just to come clear, temp server is made with the new domain and you will
join the crashed and repaired and reinstalled server to the domain. As i
can see the temp server is not using the DNS from itself, but is is a Domain
controller, so DNS must be installed on it. Point with the preferred DNS
to it's own ip address and not to the new machine. Also disable the not used
NIC from the server.
