Hi,
I am looking for an alternative to Xshell
that would allow users to gain access to
Unix/Linux hosts easily and securely on
a Windows workstation.

I searched the internet and got few
utilities like mRemote, PuTTY, SecureCRT.
I think, mRemote is not free.

Which is the best equivalent for Xshell
opensource (free) utility in Windows ?
Lemme know if there are other free
utilities that are equivalent to Xshell.
Any ideas ?

Thx in advans,
Karthik Balaguru

The below link seems to suggest that
mRemote may not be free .
http://www.mremote.org/wiki/Commercial.ashx
http://www.mremote.org/wiki/visionappMerge.ashx
I think, mRemote is no more as it got
merged with visionapp (Not Free).

SecureCRT is also not free :-(
Any equivalent freeware ?

Now, it seems that only two are free
as far i searched the internet -
PuTTY, HyperTerminal Private Edition(HTPE)

Lemme know if there are other free
utilities that are equivalent to Xshell.

Dear Crossposter,

an alternative to XShell could be:

VisionApp Remote Desktop

More information here:http://alternativeto.net/desktop/visionapp-remote-desktop/about

Great !

VisionApp Remote Desktop does
indeed feature a free version :-) as
conveyed in below links -
http://www.visionapp.com/?id=2505
http://www.visionapp.de/fileadmin/02Datasheets/vRD2010_VersionOverview_EN.pdf

But, it seems that the free download
of vRD 2010 is free for 30 days and
after that a request has to be raised
for free license !!

Free version, seems to support only 3
concurrent sessions :-(

Also, it has lot of other system
requirements :-( as below -
Microsoft RDP client version 6.X, Citrix
ICA Client Version 10.2.x or newer,
Framework 2.0 & optional requirement
of SQL Server 2000/2005.

Haven't tried Xshell. But it looks pretty good from the
Website. I think Tunnelier is pretty close to it, after
connecting to an SSH host, you can launch an ssh
shell and sftp as a dual-panel file manager. If the
remote host happens to be Windows, you can also
launch RDP from it. Like putty, you can also create
tunnels (or port forwarding) from it. There is also a
portable version of the program.
