XPSP2: The page cannot be displayed

C

carotids

Since I have loaded SP2, I have noticed that all my
browsers have difficulty connecting to a web page on the
first try.

It just gives me the standard "The page cannot be
displayed" error.

I can hit reload a couple of times and it'll finally
bring up the page. Occurs in IE and firefox.

It happens maybe 50% of the time... and is new since
installing SP2.

It seems other people are having a similiar problem...

Please help.

(Guys, I know you are going to get pelted with bugs and
error messages over the next few days... I'll say a
little prayer for you.) :)

I get a lot of those, but I imagine it's my HOSTS file doing it. The only
glitch I've run across so far is when I click on Windows Update from the
Classic menu, nothing happens. If I then click on Internet Explorer, two
pages come up... the one on top is the update site. The other is my home
page. If I run Windows Update from the Tools menu in Internet Explorer,
it works fine.

Prayers are Good Things. You didn't give any details about your Internet
connection. Do you have a firewall? If so, try either disabling the
Windows firewall or the third-party firewall. Test after each change.
It could also be a dns issue or physical connection. Is it only one one
webpage, or all webpages? Do you use specialized software from your
ISP? Post back with more details about your setup so we can try and
narrow it down.

Everything was working fine before XP SP2. Cable modem
connects to my router to which I connect my test system.

I have turned off the microsoft firewall which does not
help. I have turned off zone alarm too... which does not
help. I have turned off pop-up blocking and flushed my
dns cache.

My connection to my ISP is routine and doesn't require
anything special.

The error is to different random web pages including
google, hotmail, cnn, and fark. It's random... I
redownloaded mozilla and reinstalled it... and I'm still
having the same problem.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Check your system for "hijackware":

Help with Hijackware

http://aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/Darnit.htm

CoolWebSearch Chronicles
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/cwschronicles.html

Run these tools in the following order with nothing else running in
background:

1. CWShredder (fix all found)

2. Ad-Aware (fix all found)

3. Spybot (RTFM but generally fix everything in red)

Important: You *must* seek updates for Ad-Aware, Spybot, etc., before each
and every use, even "right out of the box". But even they can't catch
everything, 24/7. When all else fails, HijackThis
(http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe) is the preferred
tool to use. It will help you to both identify and remove any
hijackware/spyware. **Post your files to http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ or
http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=30 for expert analysis, not here.**

[Alternate download pages for many of the above tools may be found at
http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm.]

Also:

1. Download and run Stinger (http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/); then...

2. Update your virus definitions, enable Show Hidden Files
(http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2002092715262339)
and then run a full system scan in Safe Mode
(http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406)
with nothing else running in background. Note the files identified and
removed then find the corresponding page for the file at your AV maker's
online support pages (e.g.,
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/adware.winfavorites.html)
and follow all Removal steps.

WinXP Only (WinME similar): If this scan finds anything, create a new
Restore Point then Disk Cleanup > More options > Delete all but the most
recent Restore Point.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
