Because the Security Center does not recognise Norton AV2004 is no
reason to uninstall it. It works just fine. Until Symantec inserts
code into its products which inform the Security Center that they are
present and doing their jobs, Security Center won't recognise them.

Because the Security Center does not recognise a product does not mean
the product is not working as it should. In this case, disregard the
Security Center and go ahead and wait for Symantec to issue a patch
which will enable the Security Center to recognise NAV 2004.

In the mean time, do NOT remove your antivirus, unless you want to
replace it with another.

NOD32 beta 2.0.11, from Eset, is recognised by the Security Center,
and does a great job of protecting your system. There are others
which do a good job of protecting your system, and which are
recognised by the SP2 Security Center.

I am currently using Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition 8.1. The patch
from Symantec to which you refer will not be available until late November.
Should I wait until then to install XPSP2? It is my understanding that the
Norton will actually continue to work just fine but it won't be recognized by
the Windows Security Center.

That is correct.
Will it allow the scheduled automatic updates to continue occuring?

Yes.

You can turn off the "warning" from the Security Center this way:

Control Panel/Security Center, click on the "Change the Way Security
Center Notifies Me" link in the left pane.
