If nothing is working, then I can't even give you procedures to run
diagnostics and antivirus, etc. Try a repair install as follows:

Assuming your system is set to boot from the CD-ROM drive and you have
an actual XP CD as opposed to a recovery CD, boot with the XP
CD in the drive and perform a repair install as outlined below. If the
system isn't set to boot from the CD or you are not sure, you need to
enter the system's BIOS. When you boot the system, the first screen
usually has instructions that if you wish to enter set press a specific
key, when you see that, do so. Then you will have to navigate to the
boot sequence, if the CD-ROM drive is not first line, set it first in
the boot sequence. Save your settings and exit with the XP CD in the
drive. The system will reboot.

NOTE, while a repair install should leave your data files intact, if
something goes wrong during the repair install, you may be forced to
start over and do a clean install of XP. If you don't have your data
backed up, you would lose your data should that eventuality occur.

Boot from the CD. If your system is set to be able to boot from the
CD, it should detect the disk and give a brief message, during the boot
up, if you wish to boot from the CD press any key.

Once you have pressed a key, setup should begin. You will see a
reference asking if you need to load special drivers and another notice
that if you wish to begin the ASR (Automatic Recovery Console) depress
F2. Just let setup run past all of that. It will continue to load
files and drivers.

Then it will bring you to a screen. Eventually, you will come to a
screen with the option to (1) setup Windows or (2) Repair Windows
Installation using the Recovery console.

The first option, to setup Windows is the one you want and requires you
to press enter. When asked, press F8 to accept the end user agreement.
Setup will then search for previous versions of Windows. Upon finding
your version, it will ask if you wish to Repair your current
installation or install fresh. Press R, that will run a repair
installation. From there on, follow the screens.

If you only have a recovery CD, your options are quite limited. You can
either purchase a retail version of XP will allow you to perform the
above among other tools and options it has or you can run your system
recovery routine with the Recovery CD which will likely wipe your
drive, deleting all files but will restore your setup to factory fresh
condition.

Thank you Michael for answering my post
I do have the full retail version not the upgrade but i think the main problem was a defective mcaffe firewall that was booting up now that i am able to enter windows i and use the internet i still got 2 more problems my computer cant collect Information (system information) it says "Cannot access the Windows Management INstrumentation software. Windows Mangement files may be moved or missing." the other problem is i have no sound. i uninstalled my sound drivers and enabled the audio in my bios but my computer upon another boot up didnt reinstall my drivers. Whats going on?!!?
Thank you
Alan

Try using System Restore to
take you back to a time when this worked properly. If that doesn't resolve
it, try the information below.

Go to Start, type sfc /scannow in the run box and press enter. Note, there
is a space between sfc and the forward slash. You will be asked for your XP
CD. Be aware, upon inserting the CD the XP setup screen may appear, this is
not a part of sfc /scannow, rather it is being invoked by autorun. Simply
minimize the screen and allow sfc to continue.

As to the audio, I'm unclear on whether or not you have an onboard soundcard
or if it's an add-in. If an add-in, go back to the BIOS, disable the
onboard card, boot the system, go to Control Panel, open System, go to the
Hardware tab, click Device Manager, delete the Soundcard in Device Manager,
reboot the system and see if it finds your card. If not, go to the card
manufacturer's website, download the latest XP drivers for your card and try
manually installing per the manufacturer's instructions.

i cant even do a restore it got disabled and the last restore point was the reinstallition (upgrade choice) that i did yesterday

Hi michael and thanks for your previous help i have all but given up right now. I want to delete my version xp that im using now and if i have to delete everything on my hard drive than i will. bsides i already copied all my music and docs to my other harddrive.so how would i go about uninstalling this version of xp (if it deletes everything i dont care) and then reinstalling a full copy of xp. I used to have ME on this computer but I bought a full version of xp not an upgrade because ME was so corrupt and i completely formatted ME and did a complete clean installation of xp so if you can instruct on how to go about uninstalling windowsxp and reinstalling it and not get a multi-boot system(its just a really big pain in the butt) that would be awsome
Thank you
Alan

You're welcome, Alan. At least you backed up your important data, I commend
you, please see the third line in my signature.:-)

Assuming your system is set to boot from the CD-ROM drive, boot with the XP
CD in the drive. If it isn't or you are not sure, you need to enter the
system's BIOS. When you boot the system, the first screen usually has
instructions that if you wish to enter setup press a specific key, when you
see that, do so. Then you will have to navigate to the boot sequence, if
the CD-ROM drive is not first line, set it first in the boot sequence. Save
your settings and exit with the XP CD in the drive. The system will reboot.

A few screens into the boot process, if you see the message on the boot
screen to "Press any key in order to boot from the CD," do so.

After loading drivers and files, you should be taken to a screen with
the following:

To Setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.
To Repair a Windows XP Installation using Recovery Console press R.
To Quit setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

In your case, press ENTER.

Agree to the License agreement by pressing F8.

You will then be taken to a screen with two options.

To repair the selected Windows XP installation press R.
To continue installing a fresh copy of Windows XP without repairing,
press ESC.

This will bring you to a partition map where you
can delete, create and format partitions.
Select the drive you wish to format, delete the partition, then create a new
partition, format as desired and continue with XP installation.

Hi again Michael well I did everything you said and everything now works perfectly now as of yet i am going to download a whole lotta windows updates now so thank you very much for your help
