Hi All .
Just a word before I get to it. I'm a simple guy with simple needs and I'm
far from being computer literate, as are many, if not most who have
purchased XPhome. Now to the problem.
Windows XPs native back up. If you think that isn't a problem, then you
haven't been reading the posts on these NGs . My question is , why would MS
include a backup that is so obviously flawed ?
Is MS afraid of being sued should they include a backup that will actually
backup ,without having to jump through hoops first?
Is MS afraid of being sued if they should include the ability to span CDs
etc.? And why all the mumbo jumbo , why not just say what they mean when
giving the instructions ? We are talking about XP Home, something that
should be easily understood by the masses and not take a degree in computer
science to figure out .
Maybe I'm asking too much, but I don't think so.
Couldn't MS simply put out a hotfix, that would easily allow anyone to
download from the update site ,a solution to the problem faced by beginning
computer users , or anyone that wishes to do so.
If MS would do that one simple thing, if it is at all possible, I promise I
will not tell the techies. Do you promise too ?
I mean no disrespect to the MVPs or anyone else, who give their time and
knowledge freely in these NGs. Now that I think of it , if MS would do this
thing , then that would benefit them as much as those who are computer
illiterate , since they wouldn't have to spend so much time repeating to us
dunces that it simply can't be done.
Like I said , I'm a simple guy, looking for a simple solution to a complex
problem. Maybe I am asking too much.

Yes you are asking for too much. Have you ever tried to explain something very
technical to anyone with no background in the subject?

Yes, I have and it is amazingly simple to do, but first one must rid ones
self of any elitist attitudes and all feelings of superiority. It isn't like
we are asking for the meaning to life, or to have Quantum Physics explained
in ten words or less.
Windows XP has a native zipping ( compressing ) capability that works just
fine, for most. Why couldn't the backup program be just as simple and as
easy to use ? Can't wait to hear the answer to that.
Or is that too complicated to explain ? Just asking.

Some of the software that MS includes in the OS , is designed by other
companies ( the defrag is one example) . These companies want you to buy
there first line products , which I am sure that MS doesn't want to buy and
give it to us free or charge more for the OS and piss off more vendors that
is already has. If you buy the name brand utilities from companies that make
the products that work with XP you will be better off . Jym

Jym,
of course you are correct. Why should MS include any additional programs for
free than it does ? I'd probably been as well off if they had not included a
" backup " program.
Now here's a thought-------- Ad-Aware makes a fine program and even for
free. Zone Alarm , also free. Why do they make these programs free ? My
thought is they do so in order to make us familiar with their product , in
hope we will upgrade to their more capable, but more difficult to use Pro
models, when we become more adept using computers.
So,-----------is anyone going to do the same with backup programs ?
And if not , why not ? I know I wouldn't spend the big bucks for a program
that would just sit in a box and gather dust , because I'm not savvy enough
to get it to work , without trashing my XP.

I too am an XP Homer. One thing that infuriates me is when I get in some
ridiculous tangle vis-à-vis networking, permissions etc is when the message
comes up:"Refer to your administrator". A real cop-out. Just how many XP
home users have an administrator - who clearly has to be some kind of guru.

MS should have a sub-version of XP Home called XP Home OO, the 'OO'
standing for owner-operator

best to all
Rick

Rick,
you beat me to it. That was going to be my next rant, that nobody of any
consequence wants to hear.
Gee, and I thought that "Administrator" thing was only a gripe that I alone
have. :>) Sure , there is a need for " parental controls " and some , if
not all the other things about XP that drives me nuts.
But just give us the tools to do those things and instructions on how to
use or not use them , as we wish.
Having an " Administrator " on a stand alone , one user computer, is beyond
pretentious. Talk about being full of yourself. Talk about control freaks.
Well , at least they did one thing right with XP Home. They included a
firewall. Then they went and got stupid and didn't enable it automatically,
so we would be protected , at least until we could get on the internet and
get a better one.
Geez, enough already!
