So in the SP2 Toolkit, the Disk 1 is the tools and the DB engine. Disk 2 is
the complete SP1 Database. Disk 3 is the SP2 update disk. install in order
that is shows on the welcome screen.
1. database engine Update
2. Tools Update
3. Database Update
others, if necessary, such as EWF API's and remote boot stuff.
if you updated the Database engine, it's a good idea to update the DB.
The error message you got, I have seen with defective CDROM, CDROM Drive, or
dirty disks, too.
As to whether SP1 or SP2, the standard recommendation is SP2, however it
really depends on what components you are including, if any QFE's apply to
your specific build, ETC... good rule of thumb is if you're just starting a
new build, then go with SP2, and make sure you have all the latest QFE's in
place ahead of time.
Not sure who you bought the Kit from, however, you can also download SP2 for
XPE on the OEM secure site. https://microsoft.embeddedoem.com . this is
basically Disk 3.
And to answer whether or not an incomplete update (engine, but not database)
potentially yes. have not run into it however.
