I have downloaded these files
(Windows XP Embedded with Service Pack 1 Downloads)
but I dunno what to do with them.

My guess is that I have to make some directory structure
and then either copy these files to particcular places there,
or possibly unpack first....or make CDs...running one of the
setups it kept asking for a CD.

Details please !

Ok, sort of got it running now but
when the program starts it wants to connect to the database server at
"NA-L9F7D....", and this connection fails. No AV or
firewall.
Ideas ?

Obvious question becomes did you install the instance of MSDE? Do you have
another version of MSDE or SQL Server running on your machine?

Best install method for the eval I have found is to extract to CDROM, and
load that way... seems to be more smooth.

No none of those are running or installed. The MSDE.cab contains
Msde/Disk1/SQLMSDE/...
I tried running Setup from there but apparently Autorun (which is not
present in the distribution) must be used in order to process the
Autorun.inf properly...I get a MSG box saying "A strong SA password is
required....." . Have tried to install using the inf file and are
getting "installation failed". Tried dumping it all to a CD but are
getting the same error.
Note: I used the alternate download method as that automated download
was way too slow...like 100K/min.
Maybe there is something wrong/missing with these files ?

Any further suggestions ?

hmm... that would definately prohibit installation of the component DB... no
Engine, No DB :-)

there's a command line switch out there that allows a blank SA password...
try searching the google archive.

alternatively, here's the homepage for MSDE on microsoft.com... you can
download the full version of MSDE here:
http://www.microsoft.com/sql/msde/downloads/default.mspx
