Xpdf 3.00 - Viewer for Adobe PDF files

About:
Xpdf is a viewer for Portable Document Format (PDF) files. (These are also
sometimes also called 'Acrobat' files, from the name of Adobe's PDF
software.) The Xpdf project also includes a PDF text extractor,
PDF-to-PostScript converter, and various other utilities. It runs under
the X Window System on UNIX, VMS, and OS/2. The non-X components (pdftops,
pdftotext, etc.) also run on Win32 systems, and should run on pretty much
any system with a decent C++ compiler. Xpdf is designed to be small and
efficient. It can use Type 1, TrueType, or standard X fonts.

Changes:
This release incorporates a new PDF rasterizer ("Splash"), and replaces
pdftopbm with pdftoppm (which can generate PBM, PGM, and PPM files). It
also adds support for PDF 1.5.

Just downloaded this version and the 'readme' file says to open a PDF
document with the following command: xpdf file.pdf

However, no such executable exists in the above-mentioned zip file...

You want Xpdf? You'll need linux.
 
Why do they have a Win32 release then? Doesn't make sense.

The Windows release of Xpdf appears to only contain utilities to
extract/convert a PDF, but not view it.

No, it makes sense.

The 'X' in Xpdf stands for the X Windowing System common to Unix and
it's variants. Since MS Windows doesn't [1] run X, you cannot use the
'X'pdf viewer. The other non-'X' utilities, OTOH, are very useful on
their own.

Okay, I understand now (even more so after re-reading the OP here).
I guess I'll give it a miss on Windows then for PDF viewing! :)

Ghostscript with GSView is an alternative to XPDF, available for BOTH
Linux and MS-Windows. Most Windows users should stick with Adobe's
own free Acrobat Reader, which is faster and simpler if all you need
to do is read and print .pdf files.
