I have a home network with 1 XP and 1 98se computers
I am only using tcp/ip
I have cable internet and a linksys router
Internet gateway is showing on both
Workgroup name is the same on both
Both computers are set to get ip automatically
Both computers have internet access fine
The 98 computer can access the XP fine but
the XP computer cannot access the 98 computer

What have I done wrong?

Thank you,
T

The 98 computer does not show up. Only the XP computer.
Search does not work either, nor can I ping the 98

do u have any firewall running on ur 98 or any internet security progs
running ? like norton internet security or WINGATE ??

Oh duh! After removing all I did forget to check this. I now have it
checked and the 98 is showing. I was able to access it for a very
short time (under 5 minutes) then I get an error:

\\pcname\c is not accessible. You might not have permission to use
this network resource. Contact the system admin of the server to see
if you have access permission. The network path was not found.

I am system admin. This worked once, I just can't figure it out
again.

Norton firewall on the XP machine. XP firewall is off. It doesnt
matter if I turn Nortons on/off I still can't access the 98 for more
than a few minutes. Rebooting the 98 helps for a few minutes then it
dies again.

On both machines XP/98 I had just tcp/ip. I tried every suggestion
here and on the net without success. I added Netbui to XP and it all
works finally.

I know Steve disagrees, but it is the only thing that worked.

Regards,
T

The win98 user has to have an account on the XP machine.
Or you have to grant 'Everyone' access to the shared
files on the XP machine.
