XP3200+ to AMD64 upgrade - another question

Sorry if this sounds daft :

I have 3x 256mb pc3200 ddr dimms running dual channel mode. Looking at
the manuals for the boards i was going to get based on the nforce 3
250gb ( socket 754 ) or the nforce 3 ultra ( socket 939 ) i can only
use 2 dimms if i want to run at ddr400.

This will be only 512mb ram. Will this be a major stumbling block
compared to the 768 i have now? One of the boards i looked at, the dfi
UT lanparty 250gb will let me use 3 dimms but limits the speed to
ddr333.

So whats best? 512mb ram at ddr400 or 768mb ram at ddr333?

Will this negate the advantage of getting a amd64?

cheers

well obviously you are going to be underclocked...performance will be slower
due to lower FSB and all programs would reflect that

you are looking at roughly the same setup I have considered..I have an
A7N8X-deluxe Rev2.0 with a Barton 2500@ 11X200...3 OCZPC3200EL-256..if I go
the same route as you...am going to upgrade the mem to 1 gig PC4000
PQI-turbo..there is a huge bandwidth loss on the memory dropping to 333 mhz
also you would only be running at 1660mhz as opposed to 2.0ghz..so you do
the math...to do it right add 1 gig of RAM..or run the 512 for now

i think i will go for the 512mb. then later i will trade all 3 256
dimms for 2 512 ones.

OCZ will swap the ram out for you, and upgrade you to 2 sticks of 512.
I just did it this week, call em.

Hi

I thought that this couldn't be true and downloaded the manual for
s939 asus k8n-e-de-luxe

and I see you are right (they write so).

Well, I found the manual for nforce4 sli asus motherboard here:

ftp://ftp.asuscom.de/pub/ASUSCOM/HANDBUCH/Motherboard/Socket_939/VIA_Chipset/

(they have put in a wrong folder)

a8n_sli

it does not have that limitation, except for corsair ram.

For epox 9nda3+ (nforce3 250 chipset) I do not read limitations
either. But they specify for 64 bits ram: 2 sticks and for 128 bits
ram: 4 stick.

But I am not informed about that 64/128 bit classification of ddr ram.

best regards

John

I contacted them and they told me it was only for faulty RAM with no
matching replacement available.
