Place the XP CD in the drive, when the setup screen appears, select "Check
System Compatibility." This will check your hardware and software for
potential problems.
Be sure all your drivers are up to date, check the device manufacturer's web
sites for recent updates, especially for you graphics card and soundcard as
well as any devices attached to the system, printers, scanners, zip drives,
etc.
Check event log for errors that appear to correspond to the time when the
error took place. Go to Control Panel, open Administrative Tools, open
Event Viewer, look for the errors as described, if you find any, double
click, the information contained within may give a clue as to the source of
the issue.
