Eric

I have a problem that many seem to be having. I have a
broadband wired/wireless router ( IP 192.18.68.2.1 net
mask 255.255.255.0 ) wired connection ( 192.168.2.12 ,
mask 255.255.255.0 ) and wireless connection
(192.168.2.28 ). Both computers can connect to the
internet via my DSl modem attached to the router. I can
connect to work computers via VPN. I cannot browse my
workgroup or ping one computer from another, let alone
share files across the network. This all worked fine
until a few days ago when I had the time to upgrade/update
anti-virus, VPN, os critical patches

I use the mn-500 base station, one wired conection and
one wired (both XP home). I can utilize the internet
fine. I could, but now cannot, see one computer on my
network from the other, i.e. i cannot ping the other
computer or map a drive to a shared folder. This was all
working fine for quite a while until a couple of days ago
when, finally having some time I made a few
upgrades/installs, one of which probably caused my current
prolems.

1. Applied a few of the latest critical updates ( I do not
recall which ones, I am at work now and not at my home
computers).
2. Upgraded the firmware on the mn-500 base station
3. Installed a Checkpoint SecureRemote VPN-1 setup on the
wired connection machine. This seems to be the most
likely culprit, but I cannot be sure yet.
4. Applied latest MAcafee anti-virus updates.

As I did these upgrades/installs, all seemed well. I was
focusing on Interenet connectivity, which is fine. Only
late into the process did I realize that my two computers
could not see each other, in fact I'm pretty sure I
noticed the problem before installing the mn-500 firmware
update.

Here is what I notice:

1. If i do a tracert to ANY ip I can think of, it's first
stop is at the default gateway, 192.168.2.1, my router,
UNLESS I ping anything in the range 192.168.2.2-254. I
did not think to do a route print, but will tonight when I
get home.

2. On either machine, when I go to "My network Places"
and work my way to the +"HOMEWORKGROUP" line and try to
expand it, I get an error box that says :

"HOMEWORKGROUP is not accessable. You might not have
permission to use this network resource. Contact the
administrator of this server to find out if you have
access permissions. The list of servers for this
workgroup is not currently available"

3. When I bring up my "Microsoft Broadband Network
Utility", under network devices, it says No devices
found. Yet if I log into the Base Station MAnagment Tool,
In the DHCP client list, it lists my 2 computers.

I have checked everything obvious and I am looking for any
suggestions from anyone with experience solving this
problem. I'll let you know if I get it figured out.

Eric

PS. This seems to be a prevelant problem, I have noticed
many postings, but no solutions for this issue. Most
suggest disabling the XP firewall, and for those that have
tried it and posted the result, it has not worked.

I have network issues very similar to this. Small DSL
network (wired) with W98, W2K pro, & XP pro stations.
From XP station, I get same workgroup error message when
browsing, accessing shared printers (W98) and folders
(W2K). I see hosts in Network Neighborhood, but get the
error when trying to access resources. I disabled the
firewall service, it was set to manual, w/o success. I
cannot, like you, ping via addresses or names. I do have
internet connection. Last update/patch installed was an
IE patch, I forget the KB number.
