document & send it email, noone can open the attachment. If I save it in word

of the document comes out gobbledygook.Any ideas please?

First, in case you don't realize it, neitherWindows XP nor any other
versionof WIndows has ever come with Word.

The word
processor is run by microsoft works.

What you mean is that you have Microsoft Works installed and that includes a
word processor. By the way, no version of Windows has ever included Works
either. It's rather that your vendor sold you a computer with Works bundled.

UnfortunatelywWhen I try to
construct a word document & send it email, noone can open the
attachment. If I save it in word 97-2003 it opens in notepad & then

I know very little about Works, but don't think it can create a document in
Word format. What kind of document are you creating? Specifically, what is
its extension--the last three characters after the dot?

If you need to produce Word douments, you'll have to buy a copy of Word. You
can buy it by itself, as part of Microsoft Office, or least expensively as
part of Works *Suite* (not regular works, which you have). Alternatively you
may want to acquire a compatible program like WordPerfect, Star Office, or
Open Office. Those can be similar, but not *exactly* the same as real Word.

Save it in WordPad. You do need to be aware of the capabilities of the
recipient.

MS Works does NOT come with Windows. IT was installed by your computer
dealer.

If you want to send Word docs to people, the use Word to create them.
You will have to purchase MS Word.

Much depends on the type of Works package installed on your
PC by its manufacturer.

If you have only Works (49.99 from MS), you can't save files in
the proprietary MS Word format. The best you can do is save files
in .rtf format and ship them to your friends/clients. This should preserve
your formatting but likely will perplex your friends/clients if you don't
first warn them to open the file you sent as .rtf in their version of Word.

If you have Works Suite 2006 installed on your PC, it comes with a
legal bundled copy of MS Word. (The bundled version of Word
is 2002.)

If you only have the MS Works application and not the Works 2006
bundle, and if you really want the MS Word 2002 application, you
can't beat the price of buying the Works Suite simply to get your
hands on MS Word 2002. ($99.99 from MS and $99.99 from
CompUSA.) Works Suite 2006 comes with six bundled apps so
it's a pretty decent package.

In addition to what Ken has told you, you might try these two options.
One: When saving the file you want to share with others, open the "file
type" box just below where you give the file a name, and choose the "rich
text file (rtf)" format. All computers can read rtf files.
Two: Try the free program called "cutepdf writer" The program acts like a
printer program, but produces a PDF file that can be read by Adobe Acrobat
which every computer should have.
