XP won't talk to router

I have a Linksys etherfast four port router, which I know is a working
router because i just got it off a rack where it was being used daily.
I have it plugged in according to the manual, and it has all the
right LED lights lit up.

When I go to http://192.168.1.1/ I get the regular IE "Cannot find
server" page. I tried reseting and then powering down the router,
restarted many times. I know that the nic card works too, (and plus
I'm getting the orange light on the router).

This is on a fresh install of XP. I haven't installed any apps on it
or anything. I DO have XP set to "obtain IP address automatically".

What else do I need to do to XP to make it talk to the router?

Have you tried clearing the IE cache and then trying to access the Links admin web pages?

If you run "cmd -> ipconfig /all" do you get a valid IP from the router?

Do you have the XP ICF disabled?

Can you ping the router, or other PCs, from your PC?

When I do ipconfig /all, these are the only things that look like ip
addresses in the list:

Autoconfiguration IP Address. . . : 169.254.246.177
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0

Pinging 192.168.1.1 fails.

XP ICF is not enabled (it's unchecked).

I also tried switching cables now too.

There are no other PC's connected to the router yet.

Still have good lights on the router. Please continue to advise.

Sooner, I got it working. My problem was I wan't holding the reset
button down long enough on the router. I was holding it down long
enough to see the red led blink but apparently there's two kinds of
resetting- the quick kind and the long kind. long kind worked.

thanks
