I've recently recieved a new motherboard for christmas,
and rushed to install it in a computer using windows xp.
after a couple minutes of conecting wires i booted it up,
it will complete post and begin to start windows. but then
automatically restarts. it will Post again, then go to a
screen with options of safe mode, safe mode with command
prompt, last known good configuration, or start windows
normal... whichever option is choosen windows will start
with the loading screen then immediately restart. any
help would be appreciated

I wrecked my first motherboard and all the memory that
went with it. Then I went on to successfully construct 2
subsequent computers.

The description you give makes me think the CPU may be
overheating. You say you rushed to connect wires to the
motherboard, so I bet you mis-connected more than a few.

I'd like to suggest you visit http://www.maximumpc.com/
and read their archives on building a computer and
troubleshooting it (and subscribe to the magazine if you
plan to build more computers.)

My second suggestion is that you unplug all electric power
to the computer.

Now sit down with the motherboard manual and carefully go
over everything you plugged in. Pay particular attention
to the CPU and the cooling solution you used. Are you SURE
the CPU fan is plugged in and has power and really runs?

Did you install the CPU and memory correctly? (And you did
wear an antistatic wrist strap, right?)

Are you using a really good power supply? Cheap power
supplies cause a lot of problems. And you get what you pay
for with these. You should be using a power supply from
companies like PC Power and Cooling, Enermax, or Antec.

Thanks

Another thought -- how did you install Windows XP? I hope
you did this from scratch, using a Windows XP installation
CD and installing onto a new hard disk.

If you tried to transfer a hard drive which already has
Windows XP on it from an old machine to this new one, then
you are doing it wrong. The "old" Windows XP installation
has device drivers for the old motherboard, and these
drivers will probably not work on your new motherboard.

I'm guessing this is probably not your problem though.
Most likely something physical is wrong with your hardware
installation. An overheating CPU would cause spontaneous
restarts of the system.

i had to re-install xp... it's because old drivers XP
loads at startup not compatible with new motherboard
(especially with onboard video and sound)....

Normally, unless the new motherboard is virtually identical to the
old one (same chipset, same IDE controllers, same BIOS version, etc.),
you'll need to perform a repair (a.k.a. in-place upgrade)
installation, at the very least:

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade of Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/directory/article.asp?ID=KB;EN-US;Q315341

As always when undertaking such a significant change, back up any
important data before starting.

This may also require re-activation. If it's been more than 120
days since you last activated that specific Product Key, you'll most
likely be able to activate via the internet without problem. If it's
been less, you might have to make a 5 minute phone call.
