I had to change monitors suddenly because it wasn't working and now xp won't start the dreaded blue screen comes on and checks disk for consistency says first allocation unit not valid will be truncated then it freezes I have tried to start from recovery panel and it freezes there after chkdsk /f onece it did not freeze and said there was no problems but kicked me back to the dos prompt. I am unclear exactly what commands to use even to start xp in dos since I have never really even seen dos. so my ? is If i tried to install xp over xp would I lose all my important files or is there a way to copy my files from dos to cd so I could do a clean install

Why not just boot into safe mode?......

1. Boot to safe mode
2. Remove the 'old' monitor drivers
3. Install the 'new' monitor drivers
4. Re-boot the computer
