In the middle of operation...my son went to a website to
down load something...Windows XP Home shut down suddenly
and when we tried to restart we received the following:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down
to prevent damage to your computer.

UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

Technical information:
***STOP: 0x000000ED (0x80E6C788, 0xC000009C, 0x00000000,
0x00000000)

Can anyone please help me - it won't even start in safe
mode or anything. What can I do?

Todd;
Power off
Desktop:...Open the case and reseat the hard drive IDE ribbon cable at
both ends.
Laptop:... simply remove and reinsert the hard drive.
If that fails:

Otherwise go to the website of the hard drive manufacturer and
download their hard drive diagnostics.

Do you have a hard drive overlay such as Max Blast?
Windows XP sometimes has issues with overlay software.
You may need to perform a Clean Installation without there overlay
software which is not needed anyway.
