After installing a second, additional storage hard drive
(in addition to my boot drive), XP will not start on my
eMachines 1.0G celeron. The new drive is recognized and
setup fine by the system BIOS, and the bootable utulities
that came with the drive (Maxtor)report that the drive is
operating and configured OK.
But when I attempt to boot XP, I get a quick logo screen
followed by a full screen of text starting with something
like "We're sorry, but Windows XP cannot start properly
due to a software or hardware change." Then gives several
options for starting up in Safe Mode, Safe mode with
Networking, Safe Mode with CD-ROM, or Normal Start. No
matter which of these I choose XP fails to start and it
returns to this same screen. Will not even start in safe
mode.
As soon as I unplug the new drive XP will start poroperly
again. Why will XP not start when the BIOS is satisfied
with the new drive? How can a help XP accept the new
drive if I cannot start XP in any mode?
