XP won't shut down

I have a computer running WinXP Pro, and it will not shut
down or restart without using the buttons on the front of
the case. If I choose shut down or restart from the menu,
it closes some of the programs from the system tray, and
then just sits there and doesn't ever go any farther. It
doesn't matter how many times I try, it won't leave
Windows. Any ideas?? Thanks

Try the Control Panel, Performance and Maintenance, Power Options, APM tab,
click Enable Advanced Power Management and Support.
