I just installed a drive that's been fine in another machine. The bios
sees it fine as a slave drive, but XP won't, not even in the disk
manager.

Any ideas?

Have you formatted this drive??
start/control panel/administrative tools/computer management/disk management

the drive got specific driver? wat specifically drive it is? try reconnecting
the IDE cable or maybe your IDE cable may be spoilt. try switch your master
IDE cable and the Slave IDE cable you are using now. And see wheather it will
appear in My Computer. or it had been spoilt or not compatible with your
current OS. thats all i can say.. peace off..~

By any chance is one drive a Western Digital and the other a Maxtor?
If so this combination will cause problems that depend on which is the Boot
drive.

no, Western digital & Seagate

It won't even work when they're on different IDE channels.

Wow, this is unbelievable. I just started to browse this forum to see
prior incidents of this kind for I am experienceing the same issue!
And oddly enough, my primary drive is a Maxtor (came with PC) and the
other HDD which I pulled from another PC that died, is a WD!

As OP says, I can see the second HDD in Dev Mgr and in the BIOS but not
in Disk Mgmt or Windows Explorer.
Secondary drive is explicitly configured as slave, primary is CS.
On the IDE cable, one end is connected to mother board, one end to the
secondary (because of accessibility issues) and the middle connector to
the Maxtor.

Ideally I want to format this secondary hard drive but not sure how to
do it if I can't see it in Disk Mgmt. This second HDD is kind of effed
up, so it could possibly be not formatted.

I don't have any other OS disks (like 98 SE) that might could help me.

Any suggestions- I don't want to let 20GB of storage go abegging!

Correction - I can't see the drive in Dev Mgr - only Bios.

I just booted the machine with an eval copy of Winternals ERD
Commander, and it sees the disk just fine, and let me format it. Win XP
SP2 still won't see it. Thanks MS!

Set them both as cable select OR set one as master and the other as slave.
Sharon,
Thanks.
I tried that right after I posted my note. I have the Maxtor as Master
and the WD as slave. Still same thing. I even tried an alternate
combination of the IDE cable, having the middle connector tied to the
slave and the end connector to the Master.
Now I will try both as CS per your recommendation

I think the slave WD disk is kind of messed up- if only I could see it
to format it!

Another problem that crops up now and then is the program GoBack. Many,
many Win9x systems and even a few older XP systems shipped with this
pre-installed. If the drive was ever monitored by GoBack, it will not be
recognized when dropped into an XP computer. Solution is to take the drive
back to the old machine. Use GoBack to remove the drive from its
monitoring. Once that's done, the drive becomes visible and usable on the
XP machine.
