xp won't recognize 1394 firewire external hard drives

since latest windows updates, wp will no recognize
external firewire hard drives. This has happened with 2
brands of hard drives, and 3 computers. have tried usual
drive recognition fixes without success. Suggestions for
drivers, patch, techmique?

Hi, Rob!
The same happened to me. Here is the solution I found:
1) Take the HD out of its external casing.
2) Mount it internally as slave drive in a XP Desktop PC main unit.
3) Launch XP on that PC, then partition and/or format the HD using the
standard XP procedure (Device Manager).
4) Power the PC down.
5) Take the HD out of the main unit, then mount it back in its
external casing as master drive.

When you plug it in next, it should be properly recognized.
