I'm using Windows XP Pro, and it won't read some CDs. When I put in a CD, the
cursor changes to indicate that it recognises a CD, the machine makes noises
for a while, but then nothing happens. When I open up the folder on my
computer that shows the contents of the CD drive, the drive appears empty.
Oddly, this happens for some CDs but not others. In particular, though I am
not certain about the consistency of this pattern, it seems that any CD which
is meant to start up automatically (e.g. a compuer game) will instead not
register at all. It works fine for other CDs.

Can you please help me?

I would start with killing the upperfilters and lowerfilters.

Missing CD/DVD Drives:

Use the script from Doug Knox first, if it still continues try the manual
edit.

Registry Editing Warning:

If that is still no good then check the quality of the disks.

Also:

Start
Run
"eventvwr.msc" without the quotes
Enter or click Okay
Look in there to see if you have Shell Hardware Detection service crapping
out on you
