We had a power outage Friday morning, nothing unusual
about that. When I checked the computer, it looked like a
DOS screen giving me 5 different choices on how to start
after giving examples of when to use each type. I
remember that the first 3 were different forms of Safe
Start and the last one was Normal Start. I tried
everything but the Safe with Network (I don't have one).
They all cycled me back to that screen.

When I received my computer, the recovery disk was not
listed on the invoice nor was it listed on the packing
slip. Since I didn't know I didn't receive it, Gateway
says I had 30 days from date of receipt to request it.
Well, that put it the middle of December of 2002.

So, can I restore using the Upgrade from 98 or do I need
to (re)purchase XP for Home? I need to know ASAP since
I'm losing money every minute I'm off of my computer.

TIA!

You'll need to contact Gateway and request a replacement CD
and then proceed with a "Repair Install". The only alternative
is to go out and purchase a conventional "Full Retail Version"
of Windows XP.

It would be prudent to purchase a backup power supply
unit for your computer since power interruptions can
cause damage to a computer and its file system.

Since Gateway wants $200 for the "replacement," I'll go to
Best Buy and get the full deal. That way, I can get back
online today and never have to deal with that lousey
company again.

While at Best Buy, take a look at the APC battery backups.
