After running XP Home on my computer without a problem
for months and months, today, on boot up, it produced
this error message:

"Isass.exe Unable to Locate Component
This application has failed to start because SAMSRV.dll
was not found. Reinstalling the application may fix
this."

"Safe" mode doesn't work, "Last Known..." option doesn't
work.

I can't get past the initial Windows screen (the one with
the timebar that scrolls until Windows boots).

Help!

Set the BIOS to boot CD before Hard Disk. Boot the XP CD and, instead
of Setup, take the immediate R for Repair. Assume any password
requested is blank, and TAB over.

In that CD down to C:\Windows\System32 and give
COPY DLLcache\samsrv.dll

which ought to retrieve the backup copy of that DLL

But it may turn out to be more extensive damage. If you get booted,
first act should be to refresh all system components: put the CD in the
drive, exit the autorun and Start - Run the line
SFC /SCANNOW

If you don't, then boot the CD again, and this time enter Setup, after
the license agreement take Repair installation, to refresh the entire
installation, without (hopefully) losing installed software or data.
