I have a router, and I want to connect both out computers
to the internet. Both of them will work with a direct
connection to the modem, so the ethernet cards and
internet is/are working.
But when I plug the machine with XP to the router it wont
connect. The Ethernet connection *says its connected and
shows how long its connected, but it wont pull up the
internet.
And the Explorer setup is set to find the Cable connection
and obtain IP Auto. So I am thinking ithe conflict has
got to be with the router and the XP because the W 98
machine works, the router is 2 years old, but should it
matter?

Does anyone have any clue how to get this to work?

I would suggest the following items to check:

- Your TCP/IP properties are the same in XP machine as in
98 machine

- Your router is set to DHCP enabled

- If you have MAC address filtering set only for the 98
machine, then of course the XP machine could not access
the internet (this is a longshot but still a possibility)

- You never said your connection type: is it via Cable-TV,
DSL? Is it PPPoE? Do you have a logon userid/password that
must be setup in the router or have you done that from the
98 machine before?

What kind of router do you have? Have you checked the
router settings in the router homepage?

Good luck.
