I purchased a laptop with XP installed on it, so no XP disk. I had purchased a retail version of XP Home Edition for another computer, so I used that CD to try to reinstall the operating system on the laptop. All started off ok and as it did it's first reboot, it came back up with a blue screen that said " Setup cannot locate the Windows installation you want to upgrade" If I install the toshiba recovery cd, it wants to wipe out the whole hard drive!! When I get to a command promt the only option I have A: but it does not read anything on the A drive and won't let me put c: in there says abort, retry or fail. I have tried safe mode and get a message that windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:\windows\system32\config\system.
Also when I put the retail cd in I never get an option to run repair!! Please help!!!

I have the same problem on my new computer. It has been working fine until tonight(approx. 2 months). Now it won't boot and I get the same message and have tried the same thing with the Windows XP Home edition CD. NOTHING HAPPENS!!
