I have a 14 mos. old Gateway laptop that won't boot up.
No, nada, nothing. The lights fire up and I hear the HD
whirl so it's not electrical. This issue was preceded by
an error message to the effect of "Windows has
encountered a problem and must shut down" followed by
something to do with "ARVID", ARVIG, or something like
that (it all happened so quickly). Resets, etc advised
by Gateway have failed to resolve the issue. Any
suggestions?

Please define resets advised by Gateway? If you mean you have a recovery CD
and Gateway recommended using the recovery routine to resolve the issue,
this is still their issue. We can't help because the tools on a retail
version of XP are different and offer options that may not available on the
recovery disk you received from Gateway. If there recovery failed, it's
still their issue and they need to help you resolve it.
