When booting my laptop, I get the following error
messages:

The following files are missing or corrupted:
c:\windows\ifphlp.sys
c:\windows\vmm32.vxd

Type the name of the windows loader
(e.g., c:\windows\system\vmm32.vxd

Then I get a C: prompt where I can't enter any commands
to do anything.

Any thoughts or ideas on how to get this laptop to boot
will be greatly appreciated!

Regards,
Paula

Did you recently mess with your drivers? I was trying a
driver update and somehow I have the same error, and now I
cannot access my PC at all. XP is not bootable. I
downloaded the 6 'boot disks' for XP and then it says that
it sees my copy of XP, would I like to repair it? I say
yes and I get the command to 'insert my XP Service Pack 1
CD" (which is always nice because I do not have - nor was
I ever given this CD, it was a download, and MS does not
have SR1 (only SR1a) available as a download now...

I would see if you cant boot from your CD and see if you
can use the bootcfg /rebuild command (try help or ? if you
dont see any commands listed).
Best of luck, XP has cleaned all those old files up for
me, you know, our honeymoon, the kids being born... At
least they arent taking up precious hard drive space
needed for XP to use in virtual memory :(

Paula, are you sure this computer has Windows XP on it? Those are Win9x
error messages. Vmm32.vxd is a giant "roll your own" combination driver
file that is created during Win9x setup. The file is unique to your system.
"Ifphlp.sys" (I believe you've mispelled that file name) is also standard
in Win9x. Neither of these are necessary for WinXP to boot.
