Hi,

My XP system with ICS running is constantly downloading
something. It is doing so at a slow pace but still it
amounts to probably almost 2 mb per hour.

How can I find and stop this? Thanks,

Don M

Hi

Do you have Automatic Update enabled in XP? Have a look in My
Computer/Properties/Automatic Updates tab. There is always a possibility of
a virus/trojan, have you scanned your system? Do you also have a firewall
installed?

.

Under Automatic Updates, the box checked is "Notify me
before downloading..." Is that okay?

Here is some new info:
I searched the net and found various suggestions, all of
which I checked out. I have eliminated SSDP service and
adware/spyware as the culprits.

So I used a traffic monitor program, and here are a couple
lines of data from it describing the incoming data.

dialup-67.73.153.168.Dial1.Chicago1.Level3.net
dialup-67.75.226.94.Dial1.Seattle.Level3.net

A new line like those appears every few seconds as another
packet is downloaded. The cities are all over the map.
Stamford, Los Angeles, etc.

I know Level 3 Communications is a provider of backbone
internet services. I am using Earthlink for my dialup,
and they probably contract with Level 3.

Does this data mean that Level 3 is pushing data at my
connection for some reason? Or does it just mean that
Level 3 is the conduit for someone else pushing data at me?

There is also a packet capture function in the program I'm
using, but it doesn't show the host names, just the IP
addresses, so I don't know as much after reading the
packet log.

I tried searching the net, but the words "level 3" are so
pervasive it's basically useless. And I tried their
website.

Any advice?

Thanks,

Don M
