XP, Win 98, Linksys Ethernet router and a whole heap o' trouble

I have had the strangest things happen to my ersatz home network ever since I bought this damn router

1) I can't get my XP machine to see my 98 machine, but the 98 can see the XP
2) If I load more than a couple of webpages on my XP, it will lock up the internet connection for both, presumably by doing something to the router

As far as I can tell, I've got all the network info (other than the names of the computers themselves) set exactly the same on both computers, so I sit here night after night, baffled as to what to do. And trying to figure it out on Linksys's website is akin to talking to a rock

Do you guys have any suggestions on what I can do or where I can look to get some answers?

This question is asked and answered multiple times every day in this NG.
Googling this NG might be a good start. (Grumble, grumble.)

Try disabling XP's UPnP stuff for the router. Disable ICF forever.

It might help if you'd supply a side-by-side list of the network info
from your W9x and XP PCs, including installed firewall and AV apps
and binary (works/timesout) PING results from each PC for the 7
(3x2+1) names/IPAs on your LAN.
