Hello All,
I have the same problem with a recent reinstall of XP Pro, although the
error mesaage is:
"cannot start due to a corrupt or missing file
C:\windows\system\config\system"
I understand that this is an install error and can happen at any time. When
I first crashed, I had to reformat the drive and reinstall only to get this
error message that has driven me nuts. I did get all my important data off
the drive. What bothers me is that this install is with a new WD drive and
only a few days old.
While the actual error message may be the System32 file, I do have a System
and a System 32 folder.
The first time it happened after the first crash was when I got to the SP2
cd installed, and ready for the other drivers and video. reboot and the
message from hell!
I will be getting a XP Pro SP2 cd over the weekend and hope that any
problems will be cured with this version and not with 2 different CD's.
Any suggestions to get me up and running again??
Thanks in advance!

I wonder how a CD can become corrupted, but it could happen. I am betting on
the fact that the ram I currently have (2 gb of Kingston in a ddr config.)
may have gone bad. I have new Crucial ram coming and then I will start to
rebuild then, along with looking at new hardware. I would hate to have to
upgrade to a new mobo, new ram, and a vid card along with a TV tuner
considering that there are not too many pci slots available on the new
boards.
I noticed that the system starts out fast, and then starts to slow down and
I have to wait until the application opens or sometimes will not. I am also
having issues with ATI drivers for my AIW 9800 Pro card in trying to get the
TV module to work properly.
Since I still have my WIN2K machine still working, I at least have Internet
access and do what I need to do.
I could switch to Linux, though, or do a dual boot. Maybe that would be the
smart thing to do.
Thank you for your assistance. I will get it one way or another.

Well, I have done the unthinkable. I reformatted the hard drive and replaced
the ram, reinstalled everything and so far things are working fine.
As to what could be causing the corruption of the registry, I think it is
the ATI drivers for my AIW 9800 Pro card. When I try to get the TV
functioning, it works for about 45 seconds and then when I go to change
channels, it locks up and the sound goes mute. ATI suggests that I uninstall
and reinstall the drivers. I have done this about 7 times and the same thing
still happens.
I have on order a new video card and TV tuner card (unfortunately ATI) and
try that. I can't see updating to PCIe and have to reinstall everything else
again just in case it is the mobo. Just too expensive!

Well here is the latest from me.
I formated the partition and reinstalled XP Pro after another crash and did
all the updates that are required. REinstaled everything that I needed to and
did a scan for viruses and any sort of malware or spyware and found nothing.
Since I got rid of the AIW card and went to a separate video card and TV
tuner, things seem to be working fine. I think that ATI needs to get their
act together and make drivers that will work and not have to update every few
months and they don't work or kill the OS without trying. But you can't tell
them.
All in all, everything is working for now until the next crash for whatever
reason it decides to crash for.
Thank you for your time.
