Installed a new 80gig hard drive and made it the primary
drive both in jumper settings and cable connection, made
the older 40 gig hard drive the slave drive in both
jumber settings and cable connection. Bios program
recognizes both drives.

Installed xp on the new c drive and all seems to be ok
except that the "My Computer" listing of components and
windows explorer do not show the second drive. However,
the hardware manager does show the 40 gig drive as being
installed and with an up-todate driver and says it is
operating ok in the status area. Also, when I go to
commandline dos type commands, the additional drive does
not exist as drive d:

I have reformatted the c: drive and installed xp several
times with the same results.

Anyone have any ideas?

Go into to Disk Management and see how it is reported there. It could be that
since the older drive was once assigned C: drive, XP may realize this and
therefore can not assign it this letter again since it is in use by the 80 GB
drive. The other possibility is that XP does not think the 40 GB drive is
formatted.

If the disk is showing okay in Device Manager, then Disk Management is where you
most likely will find your problem.

If you have not been into Disk Management before, a way to get there is to
Right-click on My Computer and select Manage. Inside the Computer Management
applet, you will see the Device Manager as well as Disk Management and other
tools to help you manage your computer.
