I have two identical machines, I just upgraded one from
Athlon 1 gig to an XP1.8. Now when I try to start up, my
monitor light stays amber and bios/windows will not
post. I have dbl checked proc seating, tried 3 differsnt
monitors, 3 different Vid cards, and checked out the
processor in the other identical machine. The other
machine will accept it fine, but I cannot even return to
the original hardware configuration on the machine I am
trying to upgrade.

Please help if you can!

Are both "identical" machines really identical, including
the BIOS?

Up-dating the BIOS on the troubled machine might help. But
since you say you can't return to previous hardware setup,
perhaps the CPU was installed with some problem, shorted pin
or something, and the mobo has been fried.

Hmmmmm,Din't think of that. It's the same Mobo down to
the version. It happened so quik, and I've never fried a
board before. Could dust in the cpu seat or something
have caused the short? I didn't blow it out before the
install. The new chip still works in the second machine.

Thanks for that tip, and bummer..

I don't know, just trying to make a guess based on what you
said.

Do you get any beep codes from the BIOS?

I guess you have fried the motherboard.

That is not the problem here, since the computer won't even post.

Replace "mail" with "36db"
perform
a Repair install of XP.

You must clear the CMOS. Look for CMOS clear jumper near CMOS battery. It
should have three pins with a jumper between two.
1. Unplug AC power.
2. Move jumper to connect center pin to other.
3. Move jumper to origional position.
