XP says there are no conflicts and all the hardware is
working properly. But when I put a disc into any drive: the
floppy, cd, dvd, or zip, it acts like there is nothing
there! I cannot access any data other than what's on the HD
and I cannot backup any data to any removable disc. Anyone
have any idea what in the world is going on and how to fix it?

Hi, John.

Without knowing the make and model of your computer, all we can do is guess.
My guess is that those devices are turned off in your computer's BIOS.

Did those devices ever work before? What has changed since then?

from my previous post on the subject:

Download (and install) tweakui from the microsoft website. Under the my
computer - drive selection, make sure that all of the drive letters are
checked. (I'm sure there is a way to do this directly without tweakui, but I
don't know how).

I found that, for whatever reason, my CD-ROM drive letter was not checked
which is why the hardware wasn't recognized in Windows Explorer or My
Computer on my machine.

I already have tweakui installed. Hmm...that could be the
culprit. One by one the drives stopped functioning. I'll go
back and check within tweakui to see if something there has
changed. If so, I think I'll simply uninstall the little
tweak. Thanks. I'll post the results.
