And I am able to install the new WinXP w/SP1 on my old
Gateway PII 300MGHz 128MB RAM computer, so it is obviously
a problem in the hardware. But the "Check Compatibility"
program says there are no conflicts. Any ideas are welcome.

Are you formatting and starting over or are you upgrading over an OS. In
other words when you begin the process with SP1 do you select repartition
and format?

This is the only thing I could possibly think of that could cause this
problem. I would like to see Microsoft comment on this one.

Do you have a USB mouse or Keyboard attached??? If so look at this article

Hi Jamie-
Thanks for jumping in. I have done complete re-formats
conducted by the "Boot from CD" path with no success. I
have tried two different hard drives, and one of them I
used on the old PII 300MGHz install and it worked, so I
know that hard drive is XP compatible. Mouse and keyboard
are PS/2 style - not USB. I have inserted the hard drive
in another computer, performed a format (NTFS long
format), then inserted it into the problem computer and
attempted an install "use existing file system" with the
same results. The computer always shuts down and start the
install process again, but always at a different place of
the process. Let me tell you how it feels when the copying
gets into the 90% completed area and then that "click"
happens, the screen goes blank, and we are back to square
one. Tonite I will try switching which monitor I am using
since I have tried everything else.

Tried different monitor, mouse, keyboard, no success.
Disabled audio through BIOS since audio is embedded in
MOBO. No luck. Still, old WinXP (no SP1) still installed.
By the way, I think I have done more XP installs than
anyone in my zipcode at this point.
