I installed my slave drive from Windows 98 80Gig as a
slave to my new XP. XP does not read its filed but thinks
it needs to be reformatted, and I will loose the 7Gigs of
stuff in it. How can I retrive them? Does XP not reat
fat32 files ?

Thanks,
Ron

Provided it's seen correctly by the BIOS, right click on My Computer and
select Manage... on the following screen, click on Disk Management....

It should appear on the right hand side of the screen.... assign it a drive
letter.

Given that all jumper settings and connections are
correct... XP doesn't like FAT32 partitions over 30Gb. If
you were to install the WinXP OS on that drive, set up
would only allow you to format it in NTFS. I previously
had a 30Gb drive in my PC running WinXP.. I then upgraded
to a 120Gb and used Ghost to migrate the data. Shortly
there after things got really quirky and I ended up
rebuilding my PC and partitioning it out so that I could
use FAT32. I've since converted to all NTFS since FAT32
leaves itself wide open for corruption if you crash. I
only wish that Windows had a DOS based NTFS utility for
the rescue of files when you need it.

Just to clarify something, this is the slave drive not the one that has XP
on it and XP would have no problems with a fat32 slave disk that is larger
than 32gb. This limitation is only when you try to format the boot drive
fat32 during the install process.
