XP vs Bios detecting HD

OK I will try yo be a detailed as possible. I built a new system AMD 4400,
4gb ram, with new Maxtor 6V300FO Sata HD. Running XP Home SP2, on a Gigabyte
K8 Triton GA-K8NSC-939 MoBo, Latest Bios loaded, and LBA 48. My first HD
wasn't being recognized and after running Maxtor Diagnostics came up with
error code ddac9a63 (get RMA to return). OK So I blanked an old 120 Western
Drive and reinstalled everything nice and clean, with all updates and
patches. I got my replacement drive and went to copy from 1 to another. NO,
NO, NO, I get another error dd69636b (get RMA to return) NNNNNOOOOOOOOO.
But here is the kicker that makes me think maybe not. Bios sees the drive, &
Device Manager shows it, but Windows won't show it, Control.....Disk
Mnagement shows it as "not initialized" whe I tell it to initalize it, it
fails. OK so if this were all I would say it bites, but I got another bad
drive. BUT, my friend brought over a 200GB Maxtor External USB HD, but XP
won't see it. His Laptop and Home PC sees it everyday. again Disk
Mnagement shows it as "not initialized". SInce I don't want to lose his data
I am not hitting initialize.

So am I the only one that thinks I have an XP problem? If anyone can shed
ANY light....Please do!!

The common factor appears to be Maxtor.. remove anything Maxtor from your
system.. do not add anything Maxtor into your system.. remember to tell
others the same.. there are a few resellers around where I live that will
not touch Maxtor products..

Smartieab:
It's hard to believe that both Maxtor HDs were defective although it is
possible.

Did you install the proper SATA driver for those drives? See
http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Support/...board&ProductID=1881&ProductName=GA-K8NSC-939
and *carefully* read your motherboard's User Manual re installing SATA
drivers.

That's pretty lame advice coming from an MS-MVP.

The OP ran Maxtor Diags on the drives and gotten an RMA code.. Maxtor Diags
is written to pass as many drives as possible that are still within
warranty, it seems.. so when Maxtor Diags say the drive is crap, it really
must be..

I have had five Maxtors go on me.. the last two I never sent back, because I
didn't want any more of them.. some of my clients, when requesting hard
drive upgrades, have asked me NOT to fit Maxtor drives because they have had
one go on them or know somebody who has had a problem..

Only one reseller in my area will go near them, presumably because there is
a better profit margin..

So if you were me, what advice would you have given?.. remember also that
this is NOT an XP issue..

My experience has been just the opposite. I currently have 4 Maxtors and 1
WD installed in my pc. The original WD had to be RMA'd because it
occasionally would not power up. I wouldn't think twice about buying a
Maxtor, in fact just picked up a new 300gb with 16mb cache at Staples a few
weeks ago for $99 after rebates and it works great.
