What is the major difference between the way Windows 98 operated during
games online line and the way XP does? Is there someway to disable it or
work around it? I have several games that won't play online when the host is
using XP and when XP players try to join.

If you've got Windows XP set up properly, i.e., the correct ports open if
you're running either the built-in firewall or a router, then you shouldn't
be having any problems. Have you checked with the game web sites to see
which ports are needed, or the support section which is hosting the games?

Well the problem is severe enough that I can't even see another player when
trying a LAN game, let alone join the game.

Which game is it?

Well Unfortunately Activision is no longer proving support for the game
which is Interstate 82. It, and about 20 other games release by Activision
1998 through 2001 wer released with the peer to peer network package called
ANet. This pretty much my last resort otherwise the game is going to the XP
killed game dumpster.

Hi Dark,

Maybe that game uses IPX which is not installed and activated
by default during Windows XP installation. Go to the properties
of your network adapter / networking tab / install... / protocol
to Add... the NWLink IPX/SPX. Hope this helps! :-)

I use ICS and DSL through a server computer. Will
installing IPX on the other computers in my LAN cause
intereference in this?

Hi,

No the 2 protocols can work independently of each other
while harmoniously existing on the same system. HTH. :-)
