I noticed that when saving an XP ppt file it's size was
about 600kb. Then saved same as 97 ppt file to send to a
computer that had older version 97 Powerpoint file was
about 6 MB. Wow? Does Powerpoint XP manage file size
better, why was XP file so much smaller?

Thanks
MArk

You do NOT need to save backwards for it to work. What happens is that it
also saved for PowerPoint 95 versions, which did not have good file
compression back then. Merely send the XP file you originally created.
Keep in mind that none of the new animations will work when viewed in 97
though (no way around that). If you want to make sure that you only use the
features that you will know will work in 97, click "Tools", "Options", click
the "Edit" TAB and uncheck the bottom three "disable" features of XP.

Hi Mark,

When you saved the file, did you save it as 95, 97 & 2000 compatible? If
you did, then PowerPoint thinks to itself (it does that, you know):

PowerPoint 95 can not understand file compression and the user wanted to be
able to use it in 95, so I will uncompress all my photos from PNG type
formats to BMP.

If you will not be likely to run the presentation on a PowerPoint 95
machine, then just save as you regularly would. The earlier versions will
not understand any animations or transitions that were introduced in newer
versions, but they will be able to read the file.

You may also consider loading the new viewer, which will support the newer
effects, but won't allow editing.
