I'm running win2k sp4 in my system. Was wondering if I would reap any
speed advantages by getting XP pro.

The only thing I don't like about 2k is my slow 2 min boot time. How
much faster is XP at booting.

My new rig is going to be a Nforce 2 , 9700pro, 1 gig DDR, OS- ?????

I own win2k so if XP is not any better for speed I could save 150.00
or so.

Since XP is based mainly around win 2k it won't make much difference.

Only reasons I refuse to use XP is

1. Activation
2. Has more security loopholes which need fixing.
3. By all reports I've heard it's actually SLOWER than win 2k.
4. I'm not selling my soul to M$

And I hate the Fisher Price desktop.

Robert,

9700 Pro is NICE. I'm running 2K SP3 and the only complaint I had was
that I couldn't install the ATI Catalyst drivers because of subsequent
instability. But with an XP 1800+ and 512MB of PC2700 DDR SDRAM, my
boot time was well under 1 minute.
Hope this helps.

I've discovered that I can run 1900+ XP Athlon with 400 MHz FSB DDR
ram which runs at 133Meg

(I bought the RAM on the chance it might work since I had a couple of
sticks of 256Meg SDRAM which SAID 133MHz but which couldn't go faster
than 100MHz.)

After trying these SDRAM in another PC which completely ignored them I
fancy they might be a bit suspect! Still I'll probably try them in
another machine if I have to upgrade the M/brd again.

That's one task I hate since althought Linux doesn't mind changing
M/Brds Windows simply pukes.

I DO ramble on don't I ! ...

I hear ya on the activation thing.

I ended up ordering a new system with XP pro 145.00.

Not getting the Nforce 2 anymore.

I'm going back to intel. Abit 875 MAX3 canterwood with 1 gig of XMS
PC500 with 2.6c cpu. Plan on running it 1:1 3250Mhz on a 250mhzx4
(1000Mhz) fsb.

It won't stomp a nforce2 set up and it does cost more but.. Nforce2s
are at the end of the life cycle in terms of cpu upgrades, the abit
will take the upcomming Prescott and I have hyperthreading to boot.

Hyperthreading does not do much on paper but it dose make the system
more responsive. I'm comming off a dual MPx system, I want to keep
some of that dual smoothness. Hyperthreading is a poor mans dual.
