XP Visual Styles for Non Admin Users

We've been struggling for a while with a problem about non-admin users not
being able to use "Xp Visual Styles" (Luna) on their desktops on an
XP-Embedded (SP2) system.

The story so far

We have two users "Admin" and "User". Admin is the administrator whilst
user is a standard User account.

When Admin logs on he can set his desktop to use "XP Visual Themes" in the
Appearance tab of Control Panel / Display.

If user logs on immediately after startup the only option on the appearance
tab is "Windows Classic". However very strangely if he logs off and back on
again then the "XP Visual Styles" option is there again. BUt after a
shutdown the desktop reverts to a Classic desktop with all the colours messed
up. After logging off and on again the XP Visual Styles desktop is restored
with no user intervention.

We've tried various registry tweaks and lots other things with no luck.

Any help would be appreciated

The plot thickens.

I've just tried setting XP Visual Styles on a system we have running on a
compact flash and it works!!. i can turn the system off and when i log back
on my Luna desktop is how i left it.

The obvious difference between the two systems (the processor and graphics
hardware are identical) is that the one that does not allow non-admin users
to select XP-Visual Styles the FIRST time they log on is running on an NTFS
hard disk whilst the other is running on a FAT compact flash.

I need to get a printout of all the componenets and settings for the two
systems. Any idea how i do that?

The image you are playing with - was it cloned or is it straight post FBA image?
How about checking NTFS permission on the users registry hive? (Document&Settings\<user profile>\ntuser.dat)

As to the list of components.. You can use ConfigurationExplorer component from XPeTools package on www.xpefiles.com. It will allow
you to export the config component list as a text file. No way to export the conponents settings info, though.
You could create CMI script (or use CMIExplorer) to export such information. But this may be a big effort just to compare two
images.

You could also diff build logs for both images.
Or save both configs as XML files and compare them with WinDiff or similar.
