Greetings,
My network consists of a desktop running XP SP2 wired to a netgear wireless
modem/router, an older desktop running w98SE wired to the router, and a
laptop running vista Home Premium which wirelessly connects to the network.
All computers connect to the internet OK, and can see and access each other,
with one exception, you guessed it, the laptop (Vista), although showing the
XP desktop on the network map, gets the "\\xxx is not accessible. You might
not have pernission etc..." message when I attempt to access it. I get the
same message if I enter the ip address of XP desktop in the run box on the
laptop. Please note that I can access the old w98 machine from the laptop
without any problems (I guess because this old machine does not have a
firewall).
I can ping the xp desktop from the laptop & vice versa.
On both the laptop and the XP desktop I have windows firewall.
Given the above, it would appear that the problem is with the firewall on
the XP desktop. If so, could someone give me a clue as to how to fix the
problem.
I have tried my best to follow the many, many entries on this and the Vista
networking newsgroup, posted by poor desperate souls such as myself who are
having he same problem, but I can't for the liife of me get anywhere.
Please somebody help before I drop my new laptop from a great height.
