I've been updating from Windows regularly and lateley I notice the computer is very slow. Eg If I'm in Word and I go to open files the pc hangs. When I go to My Computer, the pc takes a verylong time to display icons. If I'm in Explorer and I try to expand a branch it hangs. I've defragged and cleaned up the c drive. I have approx 60% free space

Any ideas

Have you checked for viruses, worms, spyware etc.?

Take a look to see what processes are running. They may be a problem.

How much memory RAM does your computer have. XP expects a lot.

I've 256mb. I have no spyware etc ran Hijack and CWshredder. When I click on My COmputer it takes about 2 minutes to display. Don't think that is down to ram.

I installed a game recently, could this have anything to do with it?

It appears that you have enough RAM to support XP but check what processes you are running as Joseph said end the ones that you don't need delete everey 1800 Solutions n CAse from registry this is a spyware that runs a process called msbb.exe spyware scanners don't scan this should solve your if it doesn't provide some more information.

PC is running a lot of Processes - but how do I know which ones I am not using?

Shay,

How current is your virus protection? Try these free online virus scans:
<http://www.bitdefender.com/scan/license.php>
<http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm>
<http://www.ravantivirus.com/scan/>
<http://security.symantec.com/ssc/home.asp>
<http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp>

Now check for, and learn to defend against, additional carriers of infection.
Have you downloaded these programs before? Download them again, as many are
revised frequently, to keep up with the current level of malware being attempted
constantly - get the absolutely most current version of each product listed.
They're all free - and most pretty small, so they download quickly enough.

First, download LSP-Fix and WinsockXPFIx from <http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm>,
and CWShredder from <http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4086.html>. All are
free.

Next, close all Internet Explorer and Outlook windows, then run CWShredder.
Have it fix all variants.

Now check for, and remove, spyware. Get HijackThis
<http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=3155> and Spybot S&D
<http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=download>. Both free.
1) Install and run Spybot. First update it ("Search for updates"), then run a
scan ("Check for problems"). Trust Spybot, and make all recommended deletions.
2) Install and run HijackThis. Do NOT make any changes immediately. Save the
HJT Log.
3) Have your HJT log interpreted by experts at one or more of the following
forums (and post it, or a link to your forum post, here):
<http://forums.net-integration.net/>
<http://forums.spywareinfo.com/>
<http://forums.tomcoyote.org/>
<http://www.wilderssecurity.com/>

If removal of any spyware affects your ability to access the internet (some
spyware builds itself into the network software, and its removal may damage your
network), run LSP-Fix and / or WinsockXPFIx.

And Shay, please don't contribute to the spread and success of email address
mining viruses. Learn to munge your email address properly, to keep yourself a
bit safer when posting to open forums. Protect yourself and the rest of the
internet - never post your address unmunged.

Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.

Did this slow down occur just after applying the latest MS updates? I had a
similar problem that required system restore point to rectify the slow down.
The updates that caused my problem were KB 837272 for WindowsMediaplayer 9
and KB833998 shop for Music online link. The computer was gelatinously
slow.. it took FOREVER to select a group of files in windows explorer!

Sure could. It is hard to say if it did or did not.

BTW was it a commercial game from a known source or a downloaded gave
you got free? Watch out for the free ones.

Free space on a hard rive really doesn't improve speed, just capacity.
Think of it as how much paper is in your notebook, and not how fast you can
write in it.

Check your RAM and processor speed. If it's slowing up on you buy RAM and a
faster processor.

Ronal

It's a fairly new pc. P4 2.2ghz, 80gb hd with approx 40gb free. 256 rd Ram. All I'm trying to do is Open a document in word!! or using explorer to view files!!

It's something else. I'm gonna try uninstalling some Windows upgrades (as previously suggested) and see what happens. When I ran msconfig and rebooted with min drivers - pc was fine. When I rebooted with normal drivers I finished all processess that were not essential, but pc was as slow as ever. Urrrgggghhhhhh
