I will shift from windows 98se to XP. What xp specific freeware
utilities would you consider essential for correcting problems with XP
or doing things better than XP?
For example, registry cleaners, disk defragmenters etc.

The main one that I kept from Windows9x for WindowsXP is Jouni Vuorio's
RegCleaner 4.3.0.780
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download460.html
It has a couple of display bugs in WinXP, but it is still very simple and
relatively efficient.
There are quite a few $wares that I find essential for XP to augment it,
but it works quite well keeping your system relatively clean as you
experiment around with various software.
You'll be pleasantly surprised with WindowsXP over 9x in a couple of
regards especially with the defrag provided with the system. It really
works well, like it's supposed to on your root drive, and it's really not
necessary to do it as often as I had to in 9x boxes. Also, EndItAll
vintage, v1.0.0.33, is handy, but in WinXP you really don't have to quit
all your programs to install and uninstall most stuff, nor do you get any
advantage out of stopping processes to defrag your root drive. Not to
argue with anyone about it over pie-in-the-sky concepts, but if you do
end processes to defrag, WindowsXP will just put everything right back
the way she wants it. LOL! Sort of like that Queer-Eye for the disk pie
show on TV.
Best regards.
