XP USB ports going to sleep?

I have 50+ desktops, some are having problems with the USB ports appearing to go to sleep. Mice quit working, Keyboards quit working, Printers quit working too. The majority of the problems are the printers, with just a few mice and keyboards so far. This symptom is spreading throughout my organization!

My only fix (never any error messages or event entries) is to unplug the cord from the USB port, wait for the DING-DONG, then plug it back it (and wait for another DING-DONG). This almost always works... Some printers start working immediately, other require their queue to be cleared, one or two machines have even required a reboot to start printing again (why?).

The hardware is Compaq Evo Ultra Slim Desktop, P4/2ghz, 1mb RAM, etc... I don't suffer from this at home with my Compaq, but I didn't buy the same computer model either.

Anyone else with simular experiences?

Look at the device manager form USB properties, make sure
that power saver settings on USB allow the USB to bring the
computer out of stand-by or hibernation, also that power is
not turned off to the USB ports.

Jim,

TY for the response! I've already modified the settings on the 4 worst computers, where all 3 devices have the problem. Now, it's just wait and see...

It's odd that this did not occur for the first few months that we had these computers, this started last June and only about half of them have this problem and then not on all of the devices.

The lady next to me, she will be using her mouse and it quits while she's using it. To me, it seemed like an OS issue; whereas, MS issued an updated something or other and it modified the USB settings... As not all of the computers are up to date on the updates, they all do not suffer from it.

Would you happen to know of a way to effect this change to all of the computers, this would save me from having to touch all of them (I'm the only IT guy here).

Thanks again, I and the users will watch this to see if it works (we certainly hope it does).

If they are all on a network, there should be a way using
remote desktop, you could do them all from one station. But
I just have one computer so don't have anything to test that
idea.

Glad that I was of some help.
