Whoa there! Let's take things step by step.
First, some terminology: A 'clean install' means that you erase your hard
drive and start fresh. An 'upgrade install' means that you upgrade an
existing installation, without erasing anything. To 'download' means to
transfer something to your computer from another computer on the network.
For most people, the only network they're connected to is the Internet. When
you 'download' something from the Internet, you are transferring something
to your computer from another computer that's connected to the Internet.
So far, so good?
It's perfectly OK to do an upgrade install of Windows XP on an computer
running ME. Many people prefer instead to do a clean install of XP, but
that's a preference, not a rule. So you didn't 'screw up' by deciding to
upgrade instead of doing a clean install.
Of course, upgrading an operating system is a major deal. Not anything that
you couldn't handle, but it does take lots of careful preparation. And that,
my friend, is where you 'screwed up': You didn't prepare well enough.
So, now what do you do? Now you have the easiest choice of all: No choice.
Rose, you need to do a clean install. And this time, you're going to do
things the right way and we're going to help you.
Rule No. 1: Before you actually start, make triple sure that you have backed
up every file and folder that's important to you, and record every bit of
information you need, like your ISP settings, passwords, software
registration numbers, etc. because you're going to be permanently erasing
your hard drive.
Now is the time to learn how to perform a clean install of Windows XP. Your
first and best source of information is the company that manufactured your
computer. They should have complete instructions for you to follow. You can
also look here for detailed instructions:

Tips:
1. Before you actually start, disconnect everything from your computer
except your keyboard and mouse. You'll add the rest later.
2. Once you've finished installing Windows, install your antivirus software
next. Do not attempt to connect to the Internet until you've done this.
3. Now connect to the Internet and immediately update your antivirus
software.
4. After updating your antivirus software go directly to Windows Update. Do
not pass Go. Do not collect $200. (If you're young that last part won't mean
anything to you.)
Do the right thing: Read all the instructions before you start. Don't start
until you have a clear understanding of what you need to do. Now go forth
and screw up no more!
